An Alternative to Pertussis Combination Vaccines for Booster Use
Combination vaccines containing pertussis, tetanus, and diphtheria antigens have played a central role in pertussis prevention for many years. However, not all individuals requiring pertussis booster vaccination need repeated immunisation against tetanus or diphtheria. BioNet’s pertussis-only vaccine provides an alternative option focused solely on protection against whooping cough.
The availability of a standalone pertussis vaccine allows a more focused booster approach. This can be valuable when repeated pertussis vaccination is recommended, including during pregnancy or for certain occupations.
During the regulatory assessment, the CHMP considered the value of a pertussis-only booster option alongside existing combination vaccines. The clinical evidence demonstrated that the pertussis-only vaccine induced robust neutralising antibody responses against pertussis toxin while maintaining a favourable safety profile.
The authorisation of a pertussis only vaccine provides an additional way to prevent pertussis and supports more adaptable immunisation approaches.
